Good news
plus, generating eros and irresistible friction
Hello friend,
I’d like to share with you some good news, and a few announcements:
My film House Fuck (6 min, 16mm, 2011) was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and will be placed in the Film Library’s permanent collection. Yay! I wish to extend my gratitude to Carson Parish, who programmed House Fuck and advocated for it in front of the Committee. Carson says: “We believe that this is the first work by a trans non-binary artist presented to the Film Committee, making this a historic acquisition, and hopefully the first of many!” Gee whiz :’)
It’s almost May Day (Beltane), one of my favorite holidays and the righteous celebration of the International Workers of the World. Rise up, comrades! Every year around this time I attend Pleasures of Beltane, a Reclaiming witch camp in the Mendocino redwoods. This year, I will be co-teaching a new class with my close friend Melanie Maze Griffin. Our class is called ‘Generating Eros’ and it goes like this:
Let’s tap into our creativity and explore the erotic in our everyday life. Do you ever feel shy or embarrassed to admit what you fantasize about? Do you find yourself grappling with the cop in your head? Do you ever get bored of your stale old spank bank? Together we will practice generating and sharing fantasies so that we can feel more free to play and explore parts of ourselves that we hide in polite society.
In this workshop, Maze and Lark will introduce a number of exercises intended to stimulate our erotic creativity, process the larger forces that erect and depress our erotic currents, and muster the courage needed to share fantasies in the company of others. We will build a shared altar, co-lead a group trance, play silly games and end the weekend with a short story to perform in front of others (if you want).
Don’t you wish you could join? Wish us luck. If this first endeavor goes well, we just might bring Generating Eros to a city near you.
Signups for camp may be closed, but here’s another offering that’s still open: Irresistible Friction! This is a new course I’m co-facilitating with my long-time collaborator Lucien Spect. Irresistible Friction grew out of our project Masculiminal, an online reading/discussion group and Hologram practice space. Whoa whoa whoa… what is the Hologram? It’s a peer-to-peer practice for distributing care differently. Based on a model developed by the Social Solidarity Clinics in Thessaloniki, Greece, three people center a fourth person and ask them questions about different facets of their health. Over time, an expanding web of non-expert practitioners grows into a network of people who feel stable and healthy, who can survive and thrive during the current and upcoming crises. So mote it be.
Irresistible Friction is the ninth Hologram course, and the first designed for Familiars, or people who are already practicing. If you’re interested but unfamiliar, that’s OK! Just let us know and we will catch you up. The course will take place online over six consecutive Sundays, from May 10 - June 14. There is no financial cost to attend. Applications are due this Friday, April 24.
Curious? Read more and apply here. And if you want just a taste, but aren’t ready to commit, you can attend the next Masculiminal session this Saturday, April 25 (theme: PLEASURE) from 10am-12:15pm pacific time. If you reply to this email with your interest, I will send you the link.
Thank you for reading. What a wild time to be alive. I wish you fortitude, good timing, and the courage to take creative risks where able. Show up for one another and don’t forget to grieve. My heart beats in solidarity with yours.
Love,
Lark
